Overview
Once you have decided to convert from SLS1 to SLS2, there will be a slight change in the menu options and interface. Additional features will also be added.
Information
Admin Center
Senior District Webmasters will find a new link in the Toolbox: Admin Center. This is the Senior District Webmaster's hub for logging into school websites, working with district modules, editing templates, and managing webmaster rights. The old Webmaster Center link will remain until you have published the new site.
Site Center
The SLS1 Webmaster Center is replaced by Site Center. Site webmasters should look for the link in the Toolbox at the top of the right column on your portal homepage. The old Webmaster Center link will remain until you have published the new site. Every school and the district site have their own Site Center where webmasters build and edit their websites as well as manage editors and contributors.
Homepage Locking
The Fast-N-Easy upgrade process uses a handful of templates with set design, an array of color options and safe site locking to preserve the look of your preferred homepage. These options are set in a way that you can make a distinctive, branded homepage and look for your site.
These designs are intended to simplify the upgrade process and get you running quickly and easily. To do that, you can edit the content of the homepage, but the design and layout are largely locked. There is an area on each homepage template where you can add more modules.
Lockers
During the transition between SLS1 and SLS2 (after converting but before publishing), you can still access all the SLS1 lockers via the Webmaster Center and the My Locker icon at the top of any page in your user portal, but you can only access the SLS2 lockers via the Site Center. After publishing your SLS2 site, the SLS1 lockers and the Webmaster Center are hidden.
Locker Module vs Old Locker Element
The two functions are the same in all respects except one. In SLS2, you may point the module to any top-level locker for the homepage, a minisite, or group, but not a subfolder within those lockers. Also, keep in mind that SLS2 has a new organizational folder called Navigation Header and that these sections do not contain a locker. You may add a Locker Module to pages contained in a Navigation Header, but you will have to point that module to the locker of a minisite or group.
Rights Management
In SLS1, Webmasters were chosen via the User Management menu at the top left of an administrator's portal. Editors and contributors were chosen using the Rights button found while editing any page of a section.
SLS2 has the same roles plus a new one called Senior District Webmaster. All these rights are assigned via the Admin and Site Centers.
Site Map
The following types of sections are included in SLS2:
- Nav Header: For organizing your site, like a minisite, but without its own news and events. Only webmasters can have rights to the pages in a Nav Header (no icon).
- Minisites: A section with its own news and events to which you can assign editor and contributor rights (globe icon).
- Hidden Folder: Like Nav Header but does not appear in the navigation menu nor do the pages within a hidden folder (folder icon with the red eye with a slash).
The site map can also include links, which appear like pages in your navigation menu but are just links to any URL you specify.
Managing Minisites
In SLS1, you had to publish pages, but not minisites. In SLS2, minisites have to be published just like pages. An unpublished minisite will not appear in your navigation menu.
Minisites can be published or unpublished from the Site Center, using the button just above the site map. In the site map:
- Select a minisite by clicking it once in the site map.
- Click the Manage Minisite button to access the minisite center.
- Click the Gear icon to change the name of the minisite or to make it a private section (that requires a user to be logged in - no public access).
Minisite Center
The tools here are the same as the site center, but the map only includes the minisite and its pages. The tabs at the top right - Pages, Locker, News & Events, Tools - are specific to the minisite is where. You can assign editor and contributor rights under the Tools tab.
