Overview
The School Loop system is 508 compliant. However, there are instances in which 508 compliance errors are generated. 508 errors appear on the modules of your web pages.
This article provides an explanation and a fix for the most common types of 508 errors.
Information
Following are the common 508 errors raised:
508 Error Message |
Explanation & Fix |
Add alternative text |
Images must include alternative text. Make it short and descriptive. Select the image in the module and enter your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Add title attribute for this module |
Fill in the Title attribute field on the toolbar for Custom HTML modules. (This is separate from the Title, which displays as the text above the module.) The title attribute briefly describes the embedded content. Select the module and enter your title attribute on the toolbar. |
Change alternative text or caption, so they don't match |
Alternative text describes the content and function of the image. Captions typically draw attention to something that is not obvious from looking at the content. Select the image in the module and enter your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Check slides for alternative text |
All images in a Carousel must have their alternative text. Select each image in the Carousel and enter your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Do not use URL as the link text |
Link text should be one or just a small number of words that describe the destination or content of the link. Use mailto links with the recipient's name as the link text. |
Include file extension in the link |
For example, use Academic Calendar (PDF) as the link text. |
Link text is ambiguous |
Link text should be short and descriptive of the content or site you are linking. Do not use text such as Click Here. |
Remove reference to "image" or "link" |
Screen readers will announce when an image is encountered, so there is no need to include this information in the alternative text. Select the image in the module and edit your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Remove image extension from alternative text |
For example, use Mr. Jones but not Mr. Jones.jpg. Select the image in the module and edit your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Shorten the alternative text (max length is 100 characters) |
Alternative text should be short and descriptive and typically well under 100 characters. Select the image in the module and edit your text in the Alt Text field on the toolbar. |
Use mixed-case, not all caps |
Do not type in all capital letters, unless using an abbreviation or acronym such as IBM or NASA. Follow this rule even if the template styles your text as all capitals. |
Change heading Hx to avoid skipped levels |
For example, you may use H3 only if H2 is used on the page. Note that this is also true for the header and footer. Check the following article for more information on changing heading levels. |
