Overview
Teachers may encounter an issue that final grades are not displayed for students when publishing progress reports. While in gradebook, final grades are displayed as 0% or F.
Diagnosis
This issue happens when:
- All assignments have 0 points value.
Teachers may think that points are not required when using custom codes like Credit/No Credit. Please note that grades/custom codes for assignments that are worth 0 points are not accounted into the final grade. - Used custom codes have Zero or Does not count values. To check if this is the reason, follow the steps below:
- Once logged in to your School Loop account, click Settings.
- Select the affected Gradebook under Gradebook Settings.
- Under Custom Codes (Universal), click Go.
- Check if custom codes, which represent a positive grade (Pass, Credit, etc.) for assignments, have the corresponding positive value (e.g., 100% or 90% of assignment max points). In this example, Credit and Pass codes have zero or does not count value, which causes the final grade to be displayed as 0%.
- Once logged in to your School Loop account, click Settings.
Prerequisites
- You are a teacher of record or a co-teacher for the corresponding gradebook.
- You have selected all the required assignments when publishing a progress report (step 5 in the linked article).
Solution
- If Assignments have 0 points value, follow the steps below:
- Select the corresponding gradebook from the Gradebooks dropdown:
- Hover over the assignment that has 0 points value and click Edit.
- Change the Points and Scaled Points values to 1 or higher number - if you are using only custom codes (like Credit/No Credit), the number of points does not matter; if you are using more complex grading and require a letter summary grade, assign the required number of points for the assignment.
- Click Publish.
- Repeat steps 2-4 for each assignment that has 0 points value.
- Select the corresponding gradebook from the Gradebooks dropdown:
- If corresponding Custom Codes have Zero or Does not count values, follow the steps below:
- Open the custom codes page (as described in the Diagnosis section).
- Delete custom codes which represent positive grades, but have 0/Does not count value instead.
- Create custom codes with the same names/labels but with an appropriate value. You can set the value according to your needs from 1% to 100%. For example:
- If you set 100% value for a code - a student will get 100% of available points for the assignment (e.g., 10 out of 10).
- If you set a lower value, for example, 70% - a student will get 70% of max points for the assignment (e.g., 7 out of 10).
Confirmation
Once the assignments or custom codes are updated, students grades will be automatically aligned with custom codes/grades you have entered:
