Overview
Teachers need to add Credit/ No Credit or Pass/ No Pass custom codes for distance learning. This option allows you to go away from traditional grades and grade assignments only with Pass or Fail grades. Also, this article describes how to adjust your gradebook so that no traditional grades are shown for students.
Prerequisites
- Make sure to backup your gradebook to avoid any issues when editing it.
- If you were using scaled grading in the previous period, you need to create a new gradebook for the new period (e.g., quarter).
Example: If you had a second-semester gradebook, you need to create a new gradebook for the 4th quarter and update the 2nd-semester gradebook to cover dates for the 3rd quarter. The new gradebook start date should start on the next day after the previous gradebook end date.
Solution
- In the new gradebook, create two custom codes:
- Credit or Pass (depending on your School process):
Code -CR
orP
Definition -Credit
orPass
Value -100%
- No Credit or No Pass (depending on your School process):
Code -NC
orNP
Definition -No Credit
orNo Pass
Value - Select Zero
Note: Do not select 0% as it may cause issues displaying the summary grade.
Note: You may enter custom code names and descriptions for the codes according to your School guidelines, but remember to select the correct Value for the codes to work properly.
- Credit or Pass (depending on your School process):
- Create new grade scale to replace default summary grade:
- From your gradebook, navigate to Tools > Go to settings.
- Go to Grade Scales (Universal).
- Click Create New Scale.
- Click Insert.
- Enter the Grade Label that you would like to be displayed for the students (e.g., In Progress) and set Floor Percent to
0
.
- Click Submit.
- Enter a name for your Grade Scale and Delete all traditional grades so that you have only the one that you created (we will have In Progress to be displayed as a grade):
- Click Submit.
- Select the newly created Grading Scale and click Submit.
- From your gradebook, navigate to Tools > Go to settings.
Confirmation
Open the corresponding gradebook; once you enter and save Credit/No Credit custom codes, the summary grade (e.g., In Progress) and progress percentage for each student is displayed.
Please note that while using Credit/No Credit grades your assignments still need to have points. If an assignment has 0 points, it will not be displayed in the progress report once published.
