Overview
When schools or district integrate their user database with School Loop using Directory Services, some users may get the following username conflict error: CONFLICT: A School Loop user named <user name> already exists.
For admins, the error shows for all conflicted user names under User Management: WARNING: CONFLICT(S) FOUND WITH EXISTING USER NAMES.
This article shares background information and resolution of this issue to be performed by the admin or IT staff at the school.

Information
School Loop searches users lists in Directory Service by domain names. If the district uses multiple domain names for users at the same school, then all user names must be unique. In the case of duplicate usernames, the first activated user receives that user name, while the other users are presented with an error of conflicting username on their activation page.
For example, consider a scenario where the school has two given users with very similar names:
- John Smith is a student with the email ID: jsmith@student.myschool.edu
- Jim Smith is a teacher with the email ID: jsmith@teachers.myschool.edu
After the school completes its integration with directory services, John immediately registers and activates his account and gets the user name jsmith in the School Loop system. However, when Jim tries to activate his account, he receives a conflicting user name error since School Loop usernames must be unique at each school.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, get in touch with your school admins or IT staff to change one of the user names in LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), or register the users manually with different user names and remove synchronization of these accounts with Directory Service.
